Crowley’s “Posters of the Cold War” book depicts the USA and USSR, side-by-side, as identical Superman characters. It implies that each nation is simply a mirror image of the other and that both are equally harmful and destructive. Cieslewicz uses the Superman character as a symbol of masculinity, machismo and the ridiculousness of the Cold War in general.
(Jean Jacques Waltz 1873-1951)This WWI poster encourages French citizens to subscribe to the 4th issue of the National Defense Loan so that the tricolor flag flying over Strasbourg can announce to the world that Peace, Liberty and Justice have returned. The image portrays three French soldiers standing guard on a hillside overlooking the reclaimed city of Strasbourg as the French flag flies proudly from the top of the Cathedral de Notre Dame. This sandstone gothic wonder is the premier landmark in Alsace.
