Hans Bohrdt was a self-taught painter specializing in maritime subjects and became so good at it that the last German kaiser named him his official art consultant on state trips. He executed posters for the Hamburg America Line, the Norddeutscher Lloyd, the Belgian Red Star Line and others. Here, for Cunard, we have a nameless liner in a low-angle frontal view, parting the waves at a good clip.
With the entire crowd’s backs facing us, the viewer instinctively wants to be drawn into the image, to become a part of this sunset-hued market scene.
All the sultry pleasures that the “Holiday Isle of the Tropics” has to offer are laid out with surreal abandon, an island’s worth of fun encapsulated in a tantalizingly discrete silhouette. Born in Munich, Seyler became a painter and teacher who spent most of his career in Germany, but also spent time on the American frontier in the early 20th century.
